Art has played an essential role in human history. Throughout history, people have valued art for many different reasons. Ancient civilizations used art to form monuments and teach history through visual displays of culture, religion and government. Art also served as a way to preserve history through documenting past cultures and ideas via visual notation. Art also helped cultures grow by spreading new ideas throughout the world and forming new societal structures.
