From the Middle Ages onwards, painting became a profession and a part of daily life in many places. Artists from Europe traveled to Italy to learn about Renaissance painting during this period. They also created academies in which to study and teach new techniques for painting. Many famous painters came out of this period, including Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. After this period, artists became even more specialized in their fields; some became known for portraiture while others specialise in landscape or still life painting. Today, painting has become a global phenomenon; many people around the world love to paint.
